Dushanzi Petrochemical Company (hereinafter referred to as "the Company") is a subsidiary of PetroChina Company Limited (hereinafter referred to as "PetroChina"). Headquartered in the Dushanzi District of Karamay City, Xinjiang, the Company possesses capacities for 10 million tons/year of oil refining, 1.4 million tons/year of ethylene production, 450 MW of power generation, and 5 million cubic meters of crude oil storage. Its Tarim Petrochemical Branch—a Tier-2 "Special Class" unit located in Korla City, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang—has production capacities of 600,000 tons/year of ethylene, 450,000 tons/year of synthetic ammonia, and 800,000 tons/year of urea. With a workforce of 10,400 employees and total assets of 26.4 billion yuan, the Company produces over 500 types of petrochemical products across 16 major categories, including fuel oil, resins, rubber, and fertilizers. It supplies one-quarter of the refined oil and over 90% of the raw materials for rubber and plastic products within Xinjiang, serving as a strategic hub in Western my country for the import, storage, transportation, and processing of oil and gas.
The Company was founded in October 1936, launching its operations under extremely challenging conditions. In the 1950s, it constructed modern tube-still distillation and single-furnace cracking units, achieving a peak annual crude oil processing capacity of 70,000 tons. By the early 1960s, its crude oil processing volume surpassed 1.2 million tons, making it my country's first refinery with a million-ton capacity. In the 1990s, adhering to a spirit of intense dedication—characterized by the motto "eat for three minutes, sleep for five, and work for sixteen"—the Company built Xinjiang's first ethylene plant, with a capacity of 140,000 tons/year. In 2009, operating with a unified team across dual fronts, it completed the "10-Million-Ton Refining and Million-Ton Ethylene Project"—a landmark initiative of the Western Development Strategy and one of the "100 Classic and Exemplary Projects" commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In 2021, braving sandstorms and extreme temperatures, it completed the Tarim 600,000-ton/year ethane-to-ethylene project, serving as a demonstration project for my country's ethylene industry. Since then, the Company has evolved into a large-scale integrated refining and chemical enterprise with operations spanning both sides of the Tianshan Mountains and covering oil, ethylene, fertilizer, and power sectors. The company has been honored with titles such as one of the first "National Environmentally Friendly Enterprises," a "National Enterprise Observing Contracts and Valuing Credit," and a "National Advanced Unit in Greening." It has received the "National May 1st Labor Certificate of Merit" four times, ranked as a national "Front-runner" in ethylene energy efficiency for eleven consecutive years, and was selected by the SASAC of the State Council as a "Benchmark Enterprise for Best Practices in PetroChina's Refining and Ethylene Business" and a "Demonstration Enterprise for Building a World-Class Specialized Leader," as well as an "Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Factory" by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
In 2023, the company processed 8.561 million tons of crude oil—a nine-year high—and produced 2.008 million tons of ethylene, setting a new historical record. Chemical fertilizer production reached 794,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 12%. The company achieved sales revenue of 63.72 billion yuan, paid 10.57 billion yuan in taxes and fees, contributed 1.85 billion yuan to local public finance, and realized a profit of 134 million yuan. The Tarim 1.2-million-ton-per-year ethylene project (Phase II) was successfully approved, and construction officially commenced.
In 2024, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the company will fully, accurately, and comprehensively implement the new development philosophy. It will thoroughly execute the work plans of the Autonomous Region and PetroChina, vigorously implement the "1135" initiative (anchoring on "one goal"—overall profitability; strengthening "one form of leadership"—Party building; focusing on "three main lines"—production and operation, major maintenance shutdowns, and key project construction; and solidifying "five key tasks"—safety and environmental protection, management improvement, technological innovation, talent-driven development, and ideological and cultural construction). By doing so, the company aims to advance its refining and chemical operations toward the high-end of the industrial chain and strive to open a new chapter in building a world-class specialized leading enterprise.
